To help the town carry out its ambitious climate goals, the Police Department just took delivery of a 2022 Series Y Tesla that is used for patrols.
Police Chief Joe O’Connor is replacing most of the department’s fleet with hybrid vehicles, and EVs, including the Tesla.
The new cruiser is specially outfitted with a printer, computer, radio and light panel between the two front seats.
“It’s crowded in the front with all the equipment,” said Chief Joe O’Connor, adding that a few of the taller officers must squeeze in to manage the controls.
Three detectives use the Tesla on their shifts as department members are completing their training in the complex features of the sleek all-electric vehicle. There are three Tesla chargers along the wall of the station.
“I like the way it drives,” said O’Connor. “It generates excitement.”
It has a 300-mile range between charges. Officers generally log 50 to 70 miles per shift.
O’Connor said the Tesla was donated, in large part, by Jim and Judy Terry to help Concord achieve its sustainability goals.
He said by the end of next year, all police vehicles will be either plug-in hybrids of EVs. “We’re cutting our use of fossil fuels,”
said O’Connor.
