Hannah McIntire Sweeney, 88

June 6, 2024

Hannah McIntire Sweeney, born April 19, 1936, passed away peacefully in Rye, New Hampshire, at the age of 88.

Formerly of York, Maine, and Concord, Hannah was the beloved daughter of John R. McIntire and Lois T. Bray, and the niece of Mary McIntire Davis of York. Hannah was a proud eighth-generation descendant of Micum McIntire, one of the earliest settlers of York, and she represented the ninth generation of his lineage. She was one of the last in her family branch to carry the McIntire name.

Hannah graduated from York High School in 1954 and from the nursing school at Emerson Hospital in Concord in 1955. Following her graduation, she worked as a nurse in the nursery at Emerson Hospital.

She was an active member of the West Concord Union Church, where she taught Sunday School, participated in the women’s club, and sang in the choir. Additionally, she was a member of the Hawthorn chapter of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the York Rainbow Girls in York. In the 1950s, Hannah was a majorette with the Kittery VFW Drum and Bugle Corps.

After moving to Concord, she dedicated her time to volunteering with the Red Cross blood drives, F.I.S.H., and the Concord schools’ METCO program for twelve years. She also started and ran a phone answering service with clients including the David Reece Consultant Group and other organizations in the Concord area for twelve years.

Hannah was happily married to Oliver W. Sweeney for 65 wonderful years until his passing. They were known as lovebirds, sharing a deep and enduring love throughout their marriage.

At the age of thirty-five, Hannah was diagnosed with Scleroderma, which soon disabled her. Despite her health challenges, she loved life and enjoyed activities such as counted cross-stitch, knitting hats for the homeless and premature babies, writing poems, making greeting cards, and was an avid reader.

Hannah was the cherished mother of Carl D. Sweeney, Paul O. Sweeney, Scott T. Sweeney, and Jill M. Kitko. She was a loving grandmother to ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and had many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her sister Helen M. Bethea, of Florence, South Carolina, and three half-sisters, Ginny Woodward, Betty Weaver of York Maine, and Nancy Bray of Ukiah, California. She was predeceased by her mother, Lois T. Bray; her stepfather, Clifton D. Bray; and her beloved husband, Oliver W. Sweeney.

Hannah McIntire Sweeney lived a full and joyous life, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service will be held at York Beach Congregational Church, 18 Church Street, York, Maine, on Saturday, June 29, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to National Scleroderma Foundation, P.O. Box 411533, Boston, MA 02241-1533. Donations can also be made online at www.scleroderma.org/donate or the Micum McIntire Clan Association.
