The Concord-Carlisle High School boys hockey team improved to 8-1-1 with a commanding January 15 team performance, blanking Newton South 8-0. Seven different Patriots scored goals in the contest, and junior goaltender Sam Griswold turned aside 18 shots to earn the shutout.

The opening period was marked by strong puck possession by the Patriots with several chances, but Tigers goaltender David Banar held strong.

Midway through the first period, junior forward Cam Doull scored off a setup from sophomore Joe Grasso. Minutes later, Grasso scored with assists from Doull and Ben Ohanian.

The Patriots continued to dictate play in the second period. Sophomore Alex Fivek netted his first high school goal with an assist from junior Owen Moynihan. Late in the frame, Newton South sniper Sam Rudenko broke in alone on Griswold, but the netminder stood firm, making a blocker save to keep the Tigers off the board.

In the third period, The Patriots poured in five more goals to put the game out of reach. Fivek notched his second goal with help from sophomore Declan Daley.

Ohanian opened the Pats’ late-game scoring spree with a shot from the low slot, followed by a slick deke goal by Daley, with Tyler Kamionek finishing high over the glove after circling the offensive zone.

Senior defenseman Henry Sullivan capped the night with a coast-to-coast effort, scoring his first career goal for the 8-0 final score.

Ed Burns Coffee Pot Tournament

The Patriots are set to compete in the prestigious annual tournament beginning January 26 and continuing over the next three Sundays. It showcases some of the state’s top public high school hockey teams. The first round has 16 teams to be divided into two divisions based on MIAA power rankings.

“It’s an honor to be invited to such an event, and we’re really looking forward to it,” said head coach Rian Murray. “It just goes to show how far our program has come.”
