When my friend told me that the town has proposed to close the Concord Free Public Library on Sundays — to save $44,000 a year — I thought she was kidding.
The library is among the most valued institutions in our town, as are the wonderfully skilled librarians who staff its two locations. It’s hardly hyperbolic to say that the library is the only place in Concord where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, for free, indoors, to enjoy our substantial tax dollars at work.
Free public spaces, paid for by public dollars, that promote essential values like learning and community, are critical — especially at this moment — when forces are conspiring to undermine government and institutions in all their many forms.
