A hearty thumbs-up to CPW

March 7, 2025

Way prior to the last flake of snow or drop of sleet that laid a vicious assault on all our roads, Concord Public Works was robustly attacking every byway in town with plow, sand, and salt. In my view, every driver and employee of the CPW should be putting themselves in the “win” column against one of the worst ice conditions in recent memory.

By the time most residents finally ventured out on whatever missions demanded their attention, they should have been greatly impressed by the safe conditions and passage they found on our roads. The efforts of the CPW started early, went around the clock, and were relentless. I would suggest we all observe when a CPW truck passes by that we salute them with a vigorous thumbs-up.

As a follow up, the sidewalk plows were deployed, and their struggle was not insignificant, but pedestrian capabilities were also restored despite the severity and limitations the storm created for all of us. The one request I would make of the sidewalk plows on the Milldam is that they also clear the walkway approach to the Veterans Memorial at the head of Main Street. Frequently I will shovel it out myself, but this week’s ice siege was too much for this 80-year-old-plus codger. But the names on that memorial should never be frozen out by any storm.

Having shared these thoughts, I still hope to give the first thumbs-up to the CPW for their superlative call to duty in the face of such a harsh challenge.
