I appreciate the opportunity to write in support of Paul Boehm’s candidacy for the Concord Select Board. I have known Paul and his remarkable family for over 40 years through numerous community associations.
Others have and will extol Paul’s substantial personal skills and qualifications to serve on one of Concord’s most important policy boards — a responsibility fundamental to the town’s current and long-term well-being. As someone who has served as a Concord Select Board member (1994-2000) and on numerous other town boards and committees, I want to comment on key measures that define an effective Select Board member.
Serving on the Select Board involves a major commitment of time, energy, preparation, and dedication to the town. It is not an easy job. In addition to the many routine functions of leadership, policy-setting, and statutory/regulatory matters, numerous complex and divisive issues arise, often with little or no warning. An effective Select Board member must be intelligent, insightful, collaborative, a good and careful listener, a skilled communicator, a person of the highest integrity, and a strong leader. The role requires a broad knowledge of Concord’s many constituencies, its traditions and importance in American history. In sum, it’s very challenging.
I know that Paul Boehm is up to the task, based on his personal character, skills as an esteemed scientist and consultant, and demonstrated leadership on several town boards and committees. If you haven’t met Paul, I urge you to attend one of his coffees or meet-and-greets to get to know him. He deserves your vote. He will help keep Concord the wonderful community it is.
