In Lyndsey Lis’s [March 7, 2025] letter endorsing Alexa Anderson, noting that 15% of the high school budget is spent on out-of-district tuition felt like a cheap and gratuitous dig. We are one of the many families who rely on out-of-district placements. We didn’t seek them out; our child is a third-generation Concordian who attended the very schools we did until he simply couldn’t anymore.
People without special needs children cannot comprehend the dire necessity of these services. Nobody chooses to need them. Do we wish our son could attend CPS? Absolutely. But he can’t, and thanks to his current school, he is thriving and heading to college in the fall.
Given the increasing concern over and scrutiny of school budgets, it was horrendously insensitive to single out special needs families. I’m sure there are more examples of Ms. Anderson’s helpfulness that don’t target Concord’s vulnerable children who rely on these essential services.
