I see the School Committee through the lens of environmental issues. The Concordians I know trying to work with the schools on solar panels, electric buses, and heat pumps have been frustrated trying to work with the School Committee.
The schools share our land, air, water, and electricity and it would behoove them to be better neighbors — for direct benefits or to foster good will with the town and the townspeople who support them with 70% of their taxes.
I have heard similar stories of stonewalling and lack of consideration from parents concerned about leveling of classes (eliminating AP or honors classes), concern about hateful graffiti at Concord-Carlisle High School, and METCO issues. The School Committee needs to work with the town, not act as a stronghold closed off from the town.
Concord has replaced all its schools in the last several years and now is facing fiscal challenges on the town side. The schools need to be more collaborative to meet the continuing needs of the excellent schools that drew many of us to live in Concord as well as the town facilities that keep us safe and make Concord livable.
Watching Michael Williams in conversation, I am struck by his attention to what is said and tenacity in finding solutions. Michael is committed to nurturing excellent schools in collaboration with townspeople.
I’m casting one vote — for Michael Williams, a thoughtful, constructive listener.
