The Concord Chamber Music Society will open its 2023-2024 concert season with a performance by the critically acclaimed Jerusalem String Quartet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 8, at the Concord Academy Performing Arts Center, 166 Main St. in Concord Center. The program will include the String Quartet No. 1 by Mendelssohn, the String Quartet Op. 10 by Debussy and the String Quartet No. 1 by Paul Ben-Haim.
Praised by the New York Times for “(p)assion, precision, warmth, a gold blend,” the Jerusalem Quartet is a regular and beloved guest on the world’s great concert stages. Recent appearances include a Beethoven quartet cycle at Wigmore Hall in London, a Bartok cycle at the Salzburg Festival, their annual String Quartet seminar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, and a residency at the Jerusalem Academy of Music. Founded in 1993, the quartet is based in Israel and its members include violinists Alexander Pavlovsky and Sergei Bresler, violist Orin Kam and cellist Kyril Zlotnikov.
The Jerusalem Quartet’s recordings have been honored with numerous awards, including the Diapason d’Or and the BBC Music Magazine Award for chamber music. They have recorded the string quartets of Haydn, Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden,” an album including Dvorak’s String Quintet Op.97 and Sextet Op.48, as well as quartets by Ravel and Debussy. In 2019, the Quartet released a unique album exploring Jewish music in Central Europe between the world wars and their far-reaching influence, featuring a collection of Yiddish Cabaret songs from 1920s Warsaw, as well as works by Schulhoff and Korngold.

Parking in Concord Center is available on Main Street and in the municipal lots behind Middlesex Savings Bank and the Concord Post Office. Concord Academy is a short walk from the Concord train station on the MBTA’s Fitchburg commuter rail line from North Station and Porter Square.
