Catherine ‘Cathie’ Sur.

Catherine ‘Cathie’ Sur, 83

June 8, 2024

Catherine “Cathie” (Poggi) Sur, 83, of Concord, passed away on March 22, 2024.

She was born on October 22, 1940, in Brooklyn to Paul and Ann Walsh Poggi. She grew up in Jamaica Estates, New York, with her mother, her aunts (Veronica Walsh Lucas and Catherine Walsh O’Hare), and her cousin, Veronica O’Hare Duckworth.

Cathie attended Mary Louis Academy and Rosemont College. She met her husband, Richard “Dick” Sur, at a mixer between Rosemont and Villanova. They were married in 1965 and lived in Brighton; St. Louis, Missouri; North Andover; Quakertown, Pennsylvania; and finally settled in Concord in 1977. She had two children, Richard Christopher “Chris” Sur and Jennifer Sur.

Together, Cathie and Dick loved theater, movies, music, museums, playing bridge, and parties. (Ask anyone who knew them during the five years they lived in Quakertown or was a part of the duplicate group in Concord about parties…). Cathie was passionate about opera and her garden. She loved cooking, and she was a wonderful host and cook. She enjoyed cocktails made with ginger beer (especially Nor’Easters and Moscow Mules), spy thrillers, watching the hummingbirds and bluebirds from her porch, reading cooking magazines, and laughing. Those who knew her will remember her laugh.

Always active, Cathie was a member of the Milldames, serving as president at one time; the Garden Club of Concord, serving as treasurer from 2008 to 2011 and for many years, running the plant sale checkout table; and The Concord Country Club, where she created and chaired the bridge program from 2012 to 2021.

Cathie is predeceased by her husband, Dick, her son Chris, and her cousin, Ronnie. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer, daughter-in-law Theodora Gaitas, and granddaughter Clea Gaitas Sur.

Cathie was smart, sharp, full of fun, had a wicked sense of humor, was a good friend, and was a wonderful mom. She loved her family and adored her granddaughter. She will be missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to Cathie’s Funeral Mass at Holy Family Parish, Concord Center, on Saturday, August 10, at 10 a.m., followed by a reception and interment at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Cathie’s memory may be made to Buddy Dog Humane Society, Inc., 151 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, MA 01776 (www.buddydoghs.org).
