The Friends of the Concord Free Public Library Annual Book Sale came together in stunning fashion on Saturday, June 8, thanks to hundreds of volunteer hours that began a year ago. Since 1970, The Friends have taken pride in hosting an extensive, high-quality, fun book sale for young and old from Concord, New England, and beyond. At its heart, the Book Sale is a community event — the largest one-day all-volunteer event in Concord. Every year provides new discoveries for a young reader, bookworm, graphic novel fan, and visitors from near and far.
This year we are proud to announce that this effort raised $37,000 in proceeds that will fund a variety of library programs supported by the Friends: Everything from museum passes to concerts, poetry readings to theatrical performances, professional development for library staff and much more.
The success of the sale is attributable to several factors: Members of our community donate an extraordinary quantity of high-quality books; our dedicated year-round team of donation sorters selects, organizes, and presents the book displays; musicians; scores of volunteers, including National Charity League members and Boy Scouts, work hard on sale day (starting at 6 a.m.!); and our generous book sale customers enjoy selecting their treasures from 80 tables of thoughtfully curated books and media.
We also thank our many community partners, businesses that offer in-kind donations and logistical support for the sale. Without the assistance of Concord Dunkin’ and the Pesce family, Alpha Graphics, Brine’s Sporting Goods, Concord Academy, Concord Bookshop, Crosby’s Marketplace, CVS, Rocky’s Ace Hardware, Vanderhoof Hardware, Walgreens, North River Builders and Concord Children’s Center, the process of moving a year’s worth of book donations to the lawn would take days instead of hours.
