Let’s recycle those old trash and recycling containers

October 11, 2024

As you may know, you’ll be getting new recycling and garbage toters this month as the town introduces automated pick ups. I encourage Concord residents to recycle their old trash and recycling containers once they receive their new toters.

All Concord residents may not be aware they can recycle their old trash and recycling containers (any color) by bringing them to the compost site, 755 Walden Street (near Walden Pond) from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays and 3-6 p.m. on Wednesdays through October and November.

The new toters will likely result in over 150,000 pounds of unused plastic containers that if not recycled or reused, will be dumped in a landfill. Plastics continue to cause environmental problems, including PFAS also known as forever chemicals that show up in our water and food. PFAS chemicals cause cancer and remain in our environment for hundreds of years.

Plastic recycling doesn’t fix the problem, but it does reduce the amount of new plastics that are manufactured. Old waste containers can be repurposed, and if not needed, their recycling can be made into other items.

Please recycle your old trash containers and encourage your neighbors to do the same.
