Safety first: bicycles need flashing lights

November 1, 2024

I wish that all bikes driving on our streets would have flashing front and rear lights.

When the sun is shining in my eyes and you are in the shade, I can’t see you. If I see a bike coming toward me, I move to the right to give the car behind the bike room to pass.  The cost of these lights is negligible, especially when compared to the cost of a bike.

I grew up in a time when car dashboards were made of metal and cars didn’t have seatbelts. Car seats didn’t even exist. Traffic safety has improved a great deal since then, and this should be the next step. State law doesn’t require lights. I recently found that 30 out of 35 cars driving on Route 117 near Farrar Pond had their lights on during a sunny afternoon.

If I hit you because I can’t see you, I will feel terrible, but you might be seriously hurt. Please install front and rear lights on your bikes.
