Concord residents have options regarding the new trash and recycling program.
In October, Concord’s trash program transitioned from its barrel sticker program to registered barrels. The updated system allowed Concord residents to register for a 35-gallon trash barrel and a 96-gallon mixed-recycling barrel.
Since then, some senior citizens have voiced concerns about the program, saying the 96-gallon barrel is too big and heavy for those with physical limitations. There has also been concern that the new program is cost-prohibitive for some residents.
According to the town website, there is an option to swap out the 96-gallon mixed-recycling barrel for a smaller 64-gallon barrel, which is roughly 2 inches shorter and 3 inches narrower. The swap is free. However, for those who then decide to go back to the 96-gallon barrel, there will be a charge of $85 for the cart deployment.
There is also a discounted option for those who receive financial assistance through any of Concord’s programs, such as Concord Municipal Light Plant Residential Rate Assistance or the Senior Circuit Breaker state income tax credit. Qualifying residents receive a 50 percent discount, reducing the annual fee from $490 to $245.
Applications can be downloaded from the town website and delivered to Concord Public Works Department at 133 Keyes Road.
