Concord Independent Battery plans for busy 2023

February 9, 2023

The Concord Independent Battery recently held its annual meeting of active members in preparation for a busy calendar of activities in 2023.

The CIB, established in 1804, is the oldest known active horse drawn artillery unit and commemorates the events of Concord’s Battle at the Old North Bridge in 1775. The annual meeting sets the agenda for the year, establishes the required training schedules, accepts new members and elects the Battery Leadership for the upcoming year.

Additionally, this year the Battery honors two long standing active members who have also served on the Board of Directors for many years. Both have decided to step down from the Board this year but will remain active members.

Lowell “Sandy” Smith has been a Battery member since he was in high school in the mid 1960’s following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather, a former commander of the Battery. His family can trace their roots in the Battery to the 1890’s when the Battery was known as the Concord Artillery. His guidance and contributions to the Battery over nearly 60 years have been invaluable to all.

Robert “Bob” Eaton has also been a long-standing participant in the Battery serving as President of the Battery, as a member of the Board of Directors and as an active member for 35 years. He follows his father, John Eaton, who preceded him both as a former Battery member and as President.

Greg Sullivan and Matt Durkin were elected to the two vacated positions on the Board of Directors.
