Thomas J. Hoey, of Concord passed away peacefully on Jan. 18 at age 62, following a cardiac arrest.
Tom was born in Detroit on Jan. 31, 1960, and was the cherished son of John Thomas Hoey and Elizabeth Mitkoski Hoey. Growing up, Tom enjoyed sports and played baseball, basketball, and football. Even then, numbers and data intrigued him and he often recited the stats of his favorite athletes.
He graduated from the University of Michigan and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago. He began his career as a CPA, and became a Securities Analyst and Portfolio Manager.
In 1993, Tom met Amy at work in Chicago, and for them both, it was love at first sight. They married in 1996, moved immediately to Boston, and built a life together.
Tom was a homebody whose perfect day would have included sitting in his favorite Gardner Chair with a measuring cup of coffee, his books and surrounded by all his family. He was a lifelong reader who read multiple books on the subjects that interested him, and always marked them up.
He had a sustained interest in business and in global matters but also grew interested in math, music, climate change, and photography. Although Tom was an introvert, he never met a person he didn’t like, and was a great conversationalist who often entertained with his wit and humor. He was also given to strong opinions, especially about politics, and sometimes needed gentle reminders to calm down.
Tom loved his family dearly, and his greatest joy was watching his girls grow up and thrive. He was a devoted father who always read about their activities, because he wanted to understand their interests. He developed a special appreciation for classical music and watched their concerts and other musical performances with intense focus, peering through red binoculars.
He encouraged and appreciated hard work in others and expected it from himself. He found the world to be complex and intriguing.
Tom is survived by his beloved family, his wife, Amy Hoey, and his two daughters, Alexandra Hoey and Clara Hoey. Tom also leaves behind aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and siblings: Jean Orlicki (David) of Baltimore, MD, Elaine Gomez (John) of Hingham, MA, and Mary Gill (Kenneth) of Three Rivers, MI. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
