Fishing is one of the most popular recreational sports in the US. There are about 60 million anglers and, for many, fishing is a way of relaxing and connecting to nature. Fishing is also a family tradition passed down from generation to generation and a great way to get kids off their screens and outdoors.
On Sunday May 7, the Concord Rod & Gun Club will host its annual Bing Bartolomeo Kids Fishing Derby. This is a free event put on by club volunteers and open to the public. Kids 14 and under are invited to come to the club at 74 Strawberry Hill Road in Concord, with their families. This is a rain or shine event and fishing licenses are not needed.
Registration (free) is required at the clubhouse prior to fishing, starting at 9 a.m., and fishing is between 10 a.m. and noon. The first 60 kids who register will get a free t-shirt commemorating the event.
Trophies and fishing tackle prizes will be awarded at noon in various divisions and lunch will be served. Adult lunch tickets are $5 and there will be both a donation bucket and raffle, to help defray costs.
Bait will be available and this is a family-friendly “worm and bobber” affair, so please bring fishing equipment, if you have it (some loaner rods are available), along with suitable clothing, boots, bug spray, etc.
No experience is necessary and club volunteers will be there, to help anyone needing a hand. This is a fun catch, measure, and release event and we expect largemouth bass, sunfish, crappie, perch, and chain pickerel will be landed, based on past years. Official measuring stations will be set-up, so please bring a bucket.
As the weather warms, it’s time to get outside and the Concord Rod & Gun Club hopes that you and your family will join us for some family fishing fun on Sunday May 7th. The club is always looking for more members and the fishing derby serves as a community/family outreach event – just as it has for decades. All are welcome!
