I wrote a couple weeks ago about a couple of friends who have been on a journey of homelessness since the beginning of April.
I had been in contact with State Rep. Simon Cataldo’s office who immediately promised to refer their case to DHCD (Department of Housing and Community Development).
For the three weeks following, I had not been updated on any progress from the DHCD or the representative’s office, and when I asked the couple about any help they had received from the state, they answered that none had come. This was very discouraging to hear.
It turns out that Representative Cataldo’s office had referred the case to DHCD in a timely manner, and that they had indeed been working with the couple in attempting to find a solution.
I understand that working with this couple is not always easy and I wanted to express gratitude for the efforts of Cataldo, his staff and DHCD (among others).
My friends are currently back in a hotel on a temporary basis as they continue to search for a more permanent solution. I pray that the system is able to get there as soon as possible under difficult circumstances.
Homelessness continues to be a very real problem, even in the fancy suburbs where it isn’t always noticeable.
