The end of the school year is crawling closer from just over the horizon. To channel the energy bubbling from students eager to escape school into freedom and warmer weather, Concord-Carlisle High School’s Student Senate hosted a multitude of school spirit events celebrating spring and bringing festivity to the last stretch of the school year.
To kick off these events, the Color Run was held Saturday, May 13, a beautiful sunny day with a light wind—perfect for hosting an event involving splashing colored powder. Around 20 runners sprinted around the baseball diamonds and Memorial Field while Student Senators doused their white outfits with neon orange, pink, blue, and purple powder. (Who says art and athletics can’t mix??) Although the Color Run was not intended to have any ties to ethnic events, Student Senate reminded participants to acknowledge the event’s cultural and historical similarity to Holi, a Hindu festival that was celebrated in March this year and marks the start of spring and the triumph of good over evil.
Later in the week, on Thursday, May 18, students filed down to the bleachers on Memorial Field for the last portion of the school day to watch and participate in Student Senate’s Spring Spirit Assembly, inspired by the success of the fall Spirit Assembly in November 2022. A dunk tank involving teachers (including co-principal Ms. Stahl!), musical chairs, tug-of-war, and senior water balloon toss were all part of the chaotic excitement of the afternoon.
Unlike the Color Run and the Spring Spirit Assembly, which both had never been held before, the cornhole tournament the afternoon of the Spring Spirit Assembly is a longer-standing tradition that always promises fun and food. The cornhole tournament was accompanied by food trucks from Rolling Pizza Kitchen and Reasons to be Cheerful, which spectators and eliminated teams enjoyed while they cheered on the remaining competitors. Ultimately, the team of the Hawgs (juniors Jay Carter and Khaleil Niles) won the intense final match against the team of Marcos and Noah (seniors Marcos Braceras and Noah Thorpe).
Aside from Spring Spirit Week, Student Senate is in the midst of elections to form next year’s group of six senators per grade in addition to two School Committee representatives, one School Advisory Council representative, and a moderator-elect and secretary-elect from the rising junior class. Ahead, Student Senate is preparing for the Pop-Up Thrift Store, a popular event with the promise of special finds from the clothing donations collected at the town Drop-off Swap-off last Saturday, May 20. CCHS is ready to finish the school year with a bang!
