Frederick Sumner Carr, Jr., age 76 of Thomaston, died on July 11th in Rockport, Maine. Born June 18, 1947, in Boston, Fred was the son of Frederick Sumner Carr and Mary Baker Carr.
As a child, Fred lived in Milton, Mass., Auburn, Maine, and Concord, Mass. Fred attended Belmont Hill School (‘65) and majored in government at Harvard University (B.A., ‘70).
An expert in commercial real estate investment strategies, Fred worked for Hunneman, The March Company and Aldrich, Eastman, and Waltch, and later founded The Penobscot Group, a Boston-based research company specializing in real estate investment trusts. Fred also lived and worked in Houston, Texas, in the early 1980s, where he founded and served as President of Federal Street Equities Inc.
Fred loved to cook and host family gatherings. He also loved dogs — especially his late Gordon Setter, Davey — classical music, woodworking, riding his road bike, and the study of history and politics.
Fred is survived by his sons: Nat and his wife, Katie, and their children, Adelaide, Walker and Emma of Concord, Mass.; and George, his wife, Molly, and their children, Teddy and Oliver of Yarmouth, Maine. Fred is also survived by his former wife, Susan Carr of Lunenburg, Mass.; his brother Stephen and his wife, Kate, of Newburyport, Mass.; and sisters Hope Baker-Carr of S. Burlington, Vermont, and Sarah (Sayzie) Carr of Great Barrington, Mass. Fred’s nephews include Nick Carr and his fiancé, Mary, of Boston, Mass.; Ian Carr of Brooklyn, New York; and Andrew Swanson of S. Burlington, Vermont.
Fred’s family will have a private celebration of his life in the fall.
