Cynthia Ester Burdick Newbold, age 89, of Acton, formerly a long-time resident of Concord, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Herman Leroy Newbold.
Cynthia Esther Burdick was born in Boston, MA, on April 9, 1934. Her mother, Esther Young, immigrated from Sweden. Her father, Lester Lewellyn Burdick, grew up in Hope Valley, RI, moving to Boston in his late teenage years to sell disability insurance. Cynthia’s brother Lester Jr. was five years her senior.
Cynthia was raised in Belmont, MA; she graduated from the Walnut Hill School in Natick in 1951 and attended Pembroke College (now Brown University) in Providence, RI from 1951-1953. While attending college, Cynthia met Richard Bingaman at Fort Devens in Ayer, MA. Richard, a Russian language specialist, deployed in 1954 to Austria. Cynthia followed him to Europe. They were married in 1955 in Salzburg, Austria.
Following Richard’s discharge from the Army, Cynthia and Richard moved to Concord, MA, shortly after their first son, Steven, was born in 1956. 1959, they welcomed their second son, Stuart, to their family. Cynthia was a devoted mother leading multiple Cub Scout packs and organizing after-school and neighborhood youth activities.
Cynthia was a proud member of Concord Garden Club, Concord Country Club, and the Antiquarian Society, an active participant at 51 Walden Street, and a patron of Emerson Hospital.
In 1980, Cynthia married the love of her life, LeRoy Newbold, and welcomed five stepchildren into her family. Cynthia and LeRoy loved to sail and vacation in Vinalhaven, ME. And she found great joy in exploring the Maine coast in her Downeast style boat, Magic. Cynthia and LeRoy also appreciated their holidays to Caneel Bay, St. John. She loved to snorkel, explore the coral reefs, and witness the many fish and sea life varieties. But Cynthia’s real passion was living in Concord. She loved the town and its people and, over the years, cherished her simple interactions with everyone.
Cynthia is survived by her sons Stuart and Steven; her grandsons Alec and Nick; her stepchildren, Beth and her husband Pat; David and his wife Max and their children Bryan and Jane; Stephen and his wife Jennifer and their children Jordan and Paul, and Wendy and her husband Mark and their sons Breton and Evan.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Cynthia for visiting hours on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap Street, Concord, MA.
Donations in her memory may be made to Emerson Hospital Cancer Center, 57 ORNAC, Concord, MA. 01742
