Letter: Town should help residents prepare for climate change emergencies

September 7, 2023

May I request that the town put a link on the home page for “Climate Change: Emergency Preparedness.” This would include preparing all of us for flood, fire, and high winds. Hopefully this would include a household emergency preparation checklist — batteries, food, water, medicines, what to bring if we evacuate. The town could inspect homes for this and other safety issues and enforce deficiencies. Our police and fire first responders should not risk their lives for unprepared people.

I am impressed with the 135-page Town of Concord Hazard Mitigation Plan — 2023 Update. The next steps could be succinct public communication of the situation to ensure we know the risks to our homes in each neighborhood. How do we prepare for flooding? How much rain will cause flooding in which neighborhoods? Where is the fire risk highest?

What should the warnings be? This summer I received several phone/text warnings about flash flood and tornado warnings for my address. I admit, I don’t know what I am supposed to do.

The Hazard Mitigation Plan is excellent and the work of so many. The report can be found at https://concordma.gov/172/Hazard-Mitigation-Plan

My thanks to all for the work done.
