I am writing in support of the proposed new housing at 292-294 Baker Avenue in West Concord. I live nearby, and I know residents are concerned about increased traffic. But I think that’s a small price to pay for a project that will increase Concord’s housing supply and provide some affordable housing near a commuter rail stop.
There are possible ways to mitigate the increased traffic, such as adjusting the timing of stoplights, and if the planned bridge over the Assabet River is completed, residents of the new housing will have easy access by foot to the West Concord train station.
Affordable housing has reached a crisis point in the greater Boston area and we have an opportunity to do something about this. What do we want Concord to look like in five or 10 or 15 years? Will it be only a town for the wealthy? Or will it be a town that welcomes a diverse and thriving population of different ages, income levels, and occupations? I hope we can go in the direction of inclusivity and diversity.
