The FCC claims that cell tower RF radiation is safe, but its standard has not been updated since 1996. The nonprofit Environmental Health Trust (EHT) provides the latest research on radiofrequency radiation. Here is information from ehtrust.org, that shows why a cell tower should not be placed at Concord-Carlisle High School:
- Effects from cell tower radiation documented in scientific research include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, headaches, sleep issues, genetic damage, changes to the reproductive system, memory deficits and impacts to the nervous system.
- Children are more vulnerable due to developing brains and bodies. In Ripon, California, a school tower was removed in 2019 following a cluster of cancer cases in children and teachers.
- The International Association of Firefighters has opposed towers at fire stations since 2004, citing health issues.
- There are numerous reports of tower fires and tower collapse throughout the U.S.
- In some areas with new towers, property values have decreased by up to 20%.
- In 2011, RF radiation was classified as a possible carcinogen by the World Health Organization.
- In 2019, EHT sued the government for failing to properly review its laws on wireless radiation exposure. EHT won, but FCC has not responded in court.
- In 2020, New Hampshire State Commission on 5G asked: “Why have thousands of peer-reviewed studies including the recently published U.S. Toxicology Program … study … showing a wide range of statistically significant DNA damage, brain and heart tumors, infertility, and so many other ailments, being ignored by the FCC?”
I urge the town manager and School Committee members to follow EHT’s recommendation to place towers at a safe distance from schools and homes.
To protect the health and safety of residents, Concord should maintain strong wireless communication bylaws, especially near schools and homes.
