The CCHS boys lacrosse home game against Newburyport last weekend combined an exciting overtime finish and a celebration of the Concord-Carlisle program’s relationship with Harlem Lacrosse.
After a strong start by the CC boys, with momentum generated by wins at the faceoff circle, Matthew Carlton and Addie McIntyre combined for the first goal. Jed Cain added the second CC tally, and the CC defense was aggressive in the first half, making things difficult for the opposition.
First-half scoring was limited to just two goals. CC generated plenty of shots but faced a strong Newburyport goalie.
The second half started with CC up 2-1, and Patriots goalie Kal Lonergan made key saves. CC continued to generate strong shots in search of the back of the net.
Cain scored CC’s third goal, and Lonergan had two clutch saves at the end of the third quarter.
In a thrilling final quarter, Cain and Carlton added two more goals, bumping CC to a 5-1 lead. But Newburyport reeled off four goals, tying the game with a mere 24 seconds remaining.
A pivotal Lonergan save ensured the game would go to overtime.
With a key possession early into the OT, Cain fed sophomore Tyler Shepard for a clutch bounce shot that gave CC the electrifying overtime win.
