CCHS students get creative at Concord Art showcase

Showcasing the portfolios of 28 CCHS seniors and additional works of 80 other student artists, a May 16 reception marked the opening of the 54th annual Concord-Carlisle High School Show.

Six seniors received the David Prifti Award, which memorializes the revered CCHS photography teacher who passed away in 2011.

Featuring 2D (drawing, painting, and mixed media), portraiture, ceramics, film, wheel throwing, and photography, Concord Art’s Arts and Exhibitions Committee reviews senior portfolios to determine each year’s Prifti Award winners.

CCHS senior Liberty Lewis, 17, whose portfolio won an honorable mention in portraiture, said she “did a lot of new pieces — six of them this semester.” Five are portraits, one is a landscape, and the rest are animals, she said.

With portraits “coming naturally” to her, Lewis first photographed friends as models, mainly using oil and acrylic to represent them.

“Oil is the easiest and most fun to use,” she said, adding that she’s fairly recent to the medium. “I’m discovering a lot of new things. It’s a very fun process.”

Concord Arts said the show gives students a unique opportunity to present their work — laying out, installing, and writing artist statements — in a professional gallery setting that’s hosted the creations of contemporary and historically significant artists.

The show runs through June 2 with the support of grants from the Local Cultural Councils of Concord and Carlisle.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 12-4 p.m. For more information, call (978) 369-2578.
