Concord Camera: Thinking outside the box in West Concord

Denise Gilbert, who describes herself as “a Concord resident who enjoys photographing local treasures and sharing their stories,” sent us these images from West Concord, where she’s been enjoying the makeover of electrical boxes into cheerful community art displays.

“I noticed one of the new switch box murals being painted and thought I’d learn a bit about the artist and his design… I thought I would share what I saw and learned with you,” she writes.

“His name is Steve Bermundo. He has been primarily a digital artist, so he is taking great pleasure in this project, which requires paint. He has incorporated elements of the metal switch box into his overall design. You can see this in the painted screws and some of the metallic colors.

“At the top there are waves like water, a reference to the rivers, streams, and ponds [that are] intrinsically Concord. He has carefully planned each surface, which is already a visual delight,” Gilbert says.

“Steve is one of three talented artists commissioned to do this project and is delighted to be part of it all.”

Concord Economic Vitality Manager Mimi Graney also sent along a photo of artist Emily Morrison hard at work a little further up Main Street near the intersection of Baker Avenue. And Ivy Randall’s work on the “Outside the Box” project of the West Concord Junction Cultural District can be found at Main and Church.
