A 53-year-old Concord woman died after being struck by a vehicle on Concord Road in Bedford on Saturday.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Bedford Chief of Police John Fisher said in a joint press release that the initial investigation indicates the woman was walking her bicycle in the crosswalk at Concord Road and Reformatory Branch Trail when a Volkswagen GTI struck her.

Bedford emergency services personnel provided advanced life support to the cyclist. She was taken to Lahey Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, the car’s sole occupant, is a 34-year-old Billerica man. Police cited him for operating a vehicle with a suspended license, a crosswalk violation, and using an electronic device while operating a motor vehicle.

In addition, an immediate threat was filed with the Registry of Motor Vehicles. According to the state RMV, this would allow revocation of his license and/or right to drive.

Officials did not immediately identify either the Concord resident nor the Billerica driver, who will appear in Concord District Court at a later date.

According to The Bedford Citizen, the road was closed for almost three hours during the police investigation, which remains ongoing and with which Bedford Police and the Massachusetts State Police Collision Reconstruction Section are assisting the DA’s office.

The Citizen also noted that “funding for a proposal to extend the Minuteman Bikeway to the Concord line, featuring a tunnel under Route 62, was defeated at a Special Town Meeting in 2022. Even if approved, work on a tunnel would not have been completed by now.”
