September 6, 2024

Andrew John Clifford Hawes, 82, of Littleton, passed away on June 26, 2024. He was the devoted husband of Brenda Dorothy Hawes for 56 years.

Andrew was born in Claygate, Surrey, U.K., the third child of Mildred and Clifford Hawes, where he attended the local primary school. At age 9, he was moved to Bethany School in Goudhurst, Kent, where he boarded until graduation. He married his beloved wife Brenda at Teddington Baptist Church, where they met, and in time, three sons came along: Jonathan, Simon, and Christopher. After a brief spell working in London, he took some further exams and successfully applied to Oxford University, where he attended Regents Park College, graduating in 1969 with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics. A few years later he qualified as a management accountant in England. He held positions at General Foods and later at GD Searle, which offered him an opportunity to work in Ndola, Zambia, for two years, a very special experience allowing him and the family to explore another culture.

Andrew had an opportunity to work in the U.S. for GenRad, so he and Brenda moved the family to Concord in 1981. They happily settled in Concord, later moving to Groton and Littleton. The family also owns a house in Sandwich, where Andrew enjoyed many hours bike riding, walking the beach, and sailing. Andrew retired from Ion Track Instruments, a company he owned and sold in 2001.

Both Andrew and Brenda became active members of Trinity Episcopal Church, where Andrew sang in the choir and also served as senior warden and treasurer while serving on the vestry. He was also a longtime member of the Concord Chorus. Later in life Andrew discovered he liked to paint and has left us some beautiful pictures.

In addition to his wife, Brenda, he leaves his sons and their wives, Jonathan and Monalisa of Littleton, Simon and Elizabeth of Groton, Christopher and Jennifer of Carlisle, and four grandchildren, Isabella, Samuel, Luana, and Jackie. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Dorothy and Patricia.

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Andrew for his memorial service at 11 a.m., September 21, 2024, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street. Arrangements under the care of Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap Street, www.concordfuneral.com.
