By Andi Graceson — Concord Free Public Library
As part of the Concord 250 anniversary celebration, the Workshop at the Concord Free Public Library is collaborating with local artist and author Linda Booth Sweeney to reproduce a scale model of Daniel Chester French’s iconic Minute Man statue.
French’s Lincoln Memorial, dedicated close to 50 years after The Minute Man, was built from 28 distinct blocks of marble and meticulously sculpted by the Piccirilli brothers in their New York workshop until each piece fit together into a grand monument. While this is a testament to craftsmanship, it is also a testament to the brothers’ collaboration.
The Monumental (Re)Make project utilizes a community 3D printing process inspired by the creation of the Lincoln Memorial to foster group making with modern technology that highlights Concord’s rich history.
Makers are invited to visit the Workshop any time during regular Open Maker Hours to 3D print a part (or several) of The Minute Man. Just reserve a 3D printer ahead of time and ask for a design file when you arrive.
This is a great project for beginners, but if you’re new to the Workshop printers, staff strongly recommend reviewing instructional materials before your visit.
Makers of all ages can also attend one of the Workshop’s interactive building sessions throughout the year to learn more about The Minute Man and 3D modeling and printing while assembling the pieces printed by our neighbors.
There will be two sessions, one on Saturday, October 19, and the other on Monday, December 16.
No registration is required, but you can let us know if you’re coming through our events calendar at cfpl.info/workshopevents.
As a Certified Sustainable Library, the Concord Free Public Library takes the environmental impact of a project like this seriously. All (Re)Make components will be composed of PLA, a vegetable-based plastic, and the Library has secured a specialty recycling vendor to process the statue and any waste materials if the statue is disposed of.
Every contributor will have the opportunity to add their name to the Makers Record to be displayed alongside the completed project at the Library in 2025. Learn more about the Monumental (Re)Make at concordlibrary.org.
Let’s build!
