Local violinist Siri Smedvig will be a featured soloist during the Concord Orchestra’s 2024-25 season, which includes a March concert celebrating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
This is the second season for music director Zeke Feltrow, whose “versatile leadership and innovative programming are already making waves throughout the performing arts landscape,” says Orchestra spokesperson Carol Sohn.
Evoking the Transcendentalists
The December 6 and 7 concert is “The Unknowable” and will include the works of Boulanger, Finzi, Vaughn Williams, Tchaikovsky, and Sibelius. Smedvig, the Orchestra’s concertmaster, will play solo violin in Williams’ “The Lark Ascending,” a “magical” piece that “fits Concord’s Transcendentalist history perfectly,” Smedvig says.
On February 1 and 2, the guest conductor will be violinist and composer Alyssa Wang, who is co-founder, artistic director, and principal conductor of the Boston Festival Orchestra and assistant conductor of Boston Ballet. Wang will direct the Orchestra in “Wanderlust,” a program of Tarrodi, Schumann, and Grieg, including Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suites,” which convey the Norwegian folk hero’s many adventures. Aron Zelkowicz will perform Schumann’s passionate “Cello Concerto.”
Celebrating America
As part of Concord’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Orchestra will present “American Heritage” on March 29 and 30. It will feature music by American composers and an exciting new work — commissioned for the occasion — created by Jeff Beal, an award-winning composer of film and television soundtracks. The featured soloist will be Richard Sebring, principal horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
“Dreaming with Your Feet” is the May 31 and June 1 concert, which will highlight the lively dance rhythms of Arturo Marquez’s “Danzon No. 2” and Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.” Also, the winner of the upcoming annual Young Artist competition for musicians of high school age or younger who reside in eastern Massachusetts will perform a concerto.
