Democracy isn’t free or guaranteed. The Revolutionary War patriots knew this, and today’s Concordians know this as well. But how do we current-day Concordians express our commitment to democracy?
Simple — by becoming involved in the civic life of one’s community, state, and nation. This is different for every person. It might mean joining a town committee, volunteering for a non-profit, immersing oneself in civic groups such as the League of Women Voters, or simply voting. Every contribution helps build the body politic.
We (Ellen and Janet) worked with a Concord-based grassroots group that has brought over 250 canvassers to knock on doors in the Poconos in the swing state of Pennsylvania. While we were working to get our preferred candidates elected, we also learned a lot about an area in Pennsylvania whose demographics are a lot different than Concord. Much more ethnically and economically diverse — but with compelling themes: the economy, immigration (best interpreted as the influx of folk from New Jersey and New York driving up housing costs), and reproductive rights.
When we talked to people (those who would answer the door), we found that we were more apt to agree with their thoughts — wanting a better life for ourselves and our children.
Get involved — America needs you.
