May 1, 2023

A driver was rescued from the Assabet River Monday afternoon after a crash on Lowell Road.

Concord Police and Fire Departments received 911 calls at 2:30 p.m. reporting a vehicle in the river in the area of Macone Pond.

An off-duty police officer and another bystander attempted to help the driver, but were unable to get the driver out of the vehicle. The vehicle came to rest in about three feet of water.

The Concord Fire Department arrived a short time later and was able to free the driver after cutting a door off the vehicle with hydraulic tools. The driver was then placed onto a stretcher and hauled up an approximately 20-foot embankment by firefighters.

The driver was taken by ambulance to a landing zone at the Fenn School and, from there, was flown to a Boston-area trauma center.

There were no other vehicles involved and the driver was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by Concord Police with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section
