Boys Soccer: In a 2-0-1 week, the Patriots stayed undefeated but saw their seven-game win streak end on Friday with a 1-1 draw at Newton South. In the game at the Lions, senior forward Brady Poor scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Newton South came back and knotted the score at 1-1 at the 71:58 mark. The Patriots had opportunities late but could not convert.
C-C defeated Framingham 3-0 on Monday, October 2, on two goals by Poor, his second two-goal game of the season. On Wednesday, October 4, the varsity soccer team posted its fifth clean sheet of the season in a 4-0 win over Waltham. It was the team’s fourth straight shutout. Poor added his sixth goal of the season. Senior captain goalkeeper Ben Wasserman has recorded all five shutouts. Sophomore Austin Calabro scored his first varsity goal in the win over the Hawks.
In a 1-2 week for JV soccer, the lone win came on Wednesday, October 4, 1-0 over Waltham. Sophomore Isah Nichol scored the lone goal on a breakaway set up by a pass from Charlie Stone. In the 4-2 loss at Newton South, sophomore Jack Gates scored on a penalty kick and junior Eleyzar De Souza scored on a pass from Stone to cut the Lions’ lead to 3-2.
Girls Soccer: The girls’ varsity soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 2-0 week and are now 7-0-1. They played two strong Dual County League opponents last week. On October 4, they traveled to Waltham and won 9-0, for the biggest win of the season. On October 6, Newton South came to Concord and the Patriots shut out the Lions 2-0.
On October 14 and 15, the Concord-Carlisle women’s team will host the inaugural Krauss Cup. The tournament is in honor of the late Mark Krauss, a friend of C-C Head Coach Peter Fischelis. Krauss passed away in 2019 after battling frontotemporal dementia and ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
“Mark grew up playing soccer and we played against each other in high school,” said Fischelis. “We went on to play together during summers while in college … We became great friends and played together for 30 years.”
The event honoring Krauss’s memory will be a two-day tournament featuring four strong Division One women’s teams.
On Saturday, Winchester will play North Andover at 1 p.m. At 3:15 p.m., Concord-Carlisle will take on Wellesley. On Sunday, the consolation game will be played at 1 p.m. and the final at 3:15 p.m. All four games will be played at Concord’s Memorial Field. The proceeds from the event will benefit the Krauss family.
Girls Volleyball: In a 1-2 week for the Patriots, the lone win came at Waltham on October 4 as they swept the Hawks, 25-6, 25-14, 25-10. Senior outside hitter Lilly Johnson led the point parade with 11 on seven aces and four kills. Senior middle hitter Ella Gardner added 10 points on four aces and six kills. Senior Captain/outside hitter Isabel Jaffe also reached double-digits on nine kills and an ace. Gardner set a Concord-Carlisle volleyball record with an .867 hitting efficiency in the three-game match.
On Monday, the Patriots hosted Shrewsbury for the first time ever and came up on the short end to the fourth-ranked Colonials, 17-25, 22-25, 16-25. Ella Gardner led the offense with nine points on six kills, two aces and a stuff block. Isabel Jaffe had eight points on seven kills and an ace. Anchoring the defense was sophomore setter April Tang and Jaffe with eight digs apiece.
The Patriots closed the week with a fierce defensive battle at home against Dual County league rival Newton South. The sixth-ranked Lions won the match in three games, 18-25, 23-25, 20-25. Ella Gardner led the offense with seven points on four kills and three blocks. Lilly Johnson added six kills. Sophomore Alex Tyson contributed three aces. Setter April Tang had a double-double with 10 digs and 12 assists. Senior captain Bella DiRocco had eight digs.
Field Hockey: The Patriots went 2-0 for the week and have won eight straight and are now 9-1-1. They defeated Chelmsford 3-0 on October 4 at home on Memorial Field. On October 6 they traveled to Westford Academy and won 7-0.
Cross Country: In the girls’ lone meet of the week, they lost at Westford Academy 24-32 and are now 1-3. The boys’ lone meet was also at Westford Academy; they lost 23-34 and are now 1-3. Both teams’ win came on Kicks for Cancer Saturday over their respective Lincoln-Sudbury counterparts.
Golf: Went 2-1 for the week. On October 2, they defeated Cambridge Rindge & Latin 54.5-17.5 at Fresh Pond Country Club. On October 4, they hosted Lincoln-Sudbury at Concord Country Club and won 44.5-27.5. They lost their final match of the week on October 5 at Winchester, 46.5-25.5, at Winchester Country Club.
